Yin and yang in Saju: polarity without good and bad

Two expressions of every phase

Each Five Phase appears in a yang and yin form. Together they create the ten Heavenly Stems: yang and yin Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water.

Readers may use imagery such as direct and receptive, expansive and concentrated, or visible and inward. These are metaphors for relationship and movement, not rigid personality boxes.

Neither side is superior

Yin is not weakness and yang is not strength. They are complementary terms whose meaning depends on what they meet. A chart needs both movement and rest, expression and reflection, initiative and response.

The same polarity can operate differently in a different season, pillar, or relationship. No single yin or yang count can summarize an entire person.

Polarity helps define relationships

In Four Pillars analysis, phase relationships show whether an influence supports, expresses, controls, or matches the Day Master. Yin-yang polarity then distinguishes two versions of each relationship, producing the Ten Gods categories.
